Transport Optimization – take measures in good time before toll costs increase!

ORTEC - Supply Chain Management

A decision is causing high pressure in the logistics industry:
Amendment to the Federal Trunk Road Toll Act / increase in toll costs

There is no way around it: toll increase on 1 December 2023, truck toll to incentivise a switch to climate-friendly trucks

No transport service provider can avoid this new regulation, and there is still a long way to go before climate-friendly lorries with electric drives or hydrogen are used reliably across the board.

From 1 December, unfortunately, the CO₂ levy is set to rise to 200 EU/tonne CO₂ for vehicles from 7.5 t/tonne GVW.

But that’s not all. Vehicles from 3.5 t/zGG will also be affected by this levy from 1 July. This will affect many delivery services and therefore inner-city traffic.

This is an extremely unfavourable time for this measure, as the economy is not running properly, supply chains are disrupted, there is great uncertainty among 3PLs and haulage companies, and there is a shortage of drivers. Companies are still dealing with the aftermath of the pandemic, price increases, the war in Ukraine and rising energy costs. A high additional burden for transport companies, which will ultimately be passed on to the customer.

However, there are already solutions that help to optimise planning, scheduling and transport operations.

How do you deal with these new requirements?

Transport service providers must continue to be able to carry out transports, because logistics means following the “7 Rs of logistics” (according to Plowman):

The availability of (1) the right goods, (2) in the right quantity, (2) in the right condition, (3) to the right customer, (4) at the right place, (5) at the right time, (6) at the right cost.

For many transport service providers, it is high time to look for new transport management solutions. Solutions that help:

  • improve vehicle utilisation and reduce empty runs through centralised planning, including reducing CO2 emissions
  • reduce transport costs due to shorter distances, shorter journey times and higher vehicle utilisation
  • communicate with drivers in real time
  • react flexibly to last-minute changes and requests, such as ad-hoc orders
  • see the toll kilometres driven during planning.

Unfortunately, costs continue to spiral. Now is the right time to opt for optimisation solutions that provide you with optimum planning proposals to make scheduling and route optimisation decisions easier.
